A CMG/MILITARY CROSS GROUP OF SEVEN TO THE WELSH GUARDS.
Companion of St Michael & St George awarded for colonial services in 1973. Military Cross (1945) 1939/45 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence & War Medals, General Service Medal bar Palestine 1945-48, named to Captain D N Brinson W.G. Mounted for wear (CMG cased) with a set of miniature medals(lacking CMG) and some associated family badges.
Captain Derek Neilson Brinson was born in June 1921, educated at Bradfield College admitted in the month of September 1935, leaving in July 1940. He also attended Hertford College Oxford. Commissioned into the Welsh Guards and was awarded the Military Cross on March 1st 1945 (NWE). He is mentioned on three separate occasions in the Welsh Guards History. After the war and service in Palestine he became a Commercial Attache at Istanbul in 1951. His CMG was awarded whilst he was a Counsellor at the Foreign & Commonwealth Offices. Third Class or a Companion of the order. No citation is available for his Military Cross, though it is probably for an action described in the Regimental History
Whilst a Lieutenant in the Welsh Guards he was mentioned in the Welsh Guards History for the battle of Wavre, where he commanded 10th Platoon being fired on by a Panther Tank. His Piat operator was killed in this attack, the Tank being some 200 yards away during this action. Also and most likely the award was for his command of 4 Company held up by Spandau fire and a Self Propelled Gun. He led a group forward under fire and through uncleared houses
till within 20 yards of the gun. Then standing in the open he directed the fire of the Piat. Two hits were made and the crew made off, leaving the SPG in our hands and enabling the Company to advance. On the 9th November Captain Brinson went out to find a missing Sjt who had been wounded, though he was unable to locate him. With photocopies of both Awards and Regimental History details.
