William & Mary gold "Elephant & Castle" Guinea 1691 AU55 PCGS, London mint, KM474.2, S-3427, Fr-305. A wonderful token of British colonial history exhibiting the classic "Elephant and Castle" hallmark that signified this issue was struck from gold specie imported from Guinea. Decidedly choice for a type that is often found weakly struck; the classic conjoined bust design only exhibits light, gentle wear to the high points, same for the reverse shield. Furthermore, the rims are well-defined, the elephant is sharp, and the peripheries are as bold as the centers. This honey-amber patinated, lustrous coin is the first of its kind we will be bringing to auction in our history, and we are pleased it could be such a high quality example.
