Magdalene in prayer

Oil painting on canvas Italian Lombard master of the second half of the 17th century. The Magdalene that appears before the eyes of the observer is the reflection of an iconography different from what is proposed in the canonical systems of the time: the woman is in fact covered by a white monastic headdress, symbol of total spiritual union with Christ. This is a stylistic accent that incredibly anticipates the devotional paintings which, between the second half of the 18th century and the early 19th century, spread throughout the peninsula.
