(Ensor, James) - ANTONY, Maurice Ensor before his easel. Ostend, 28-07-1933 B/w print, 22,5 x 29 cm, signed at lower right corner "Antony", numb. 280733-2 (orig. certification stamp "Antony d'Ypres" on verso). Under wooden frame. A very intimate picture of Ensor working at his studio in Ostend. Maurice Antony (1883-1963) was born in Ypres into a family of artists and was related to Henri and Constant Permeke. He made a name for himself as a war photographer during the Great War, and his pictures of the bombed and ruined landscape of Flanders have become iconic. After the war, the family moved to Ostend where he started a close friendship with James Ensor. This provided him a unique access into the painter's private life and studio, of which this photo is a perfect testimony. Famous works by Ensor can be seen in the background, such as the Entry of Christ into Brussels.
