Large Cents 1800 S-210 R5+ AU58 PCGS. Frosty olive brown

Large Cents
1800 S-210 R5+ AU58 PCGS. Frosty olive brown and darker steel brown. The surfaces look smooth to the unaided eye but a glass shows traces of extremely faint roughness under the frosty toning. However the microscopic roughness in the central portion of the reverse is from die rust, not environmental damage, and it is always present in this die marriage. This S-210 variety used the same rusted reverse die as the preceding lot but in a later die state. No verdigris and nearly void of marks. A small nick low on the neck, a couple more close over the hair ribbon, and a nick on the leaf under the second S in STATES are the only notable marks. EDS, Breen state I. The obverse die is uncracked and unclashed, and the dull chip at the right top of the B in LIBERTY is clear. The obverse is slightly misaligned to K-6 leaving the bottom of the date tight to the edge of the planchet; the reverse is reasonably well centered on the planchet. Graded AU55 net EF45 and tied for CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #20656. Bland says EF45 and CC#2. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU55 sharpness net EF45. This is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference and in the 2000 Breen encyclopedia. A very sharp example of a tough die variety, and it comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label (36218.58/32783002). PCGS population attributed as S-210: 1 in AU58; 0 finer (10/24).

William Wallace Hays was a 19th century collector of coins, stamps, autographs, and old china. He was born on June 7, 1821, in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania and died there on July 9, 1899. Hays was employed by the Pension Office in Washington, D.C. His reference on 1794 large cents, Varieties of United States Cents of the Year 1794, was published in 1893. Co-authored by Ed. Frossard, it became the standard reference for many years, quickly replacing the Maris reference on 1794 cents and Frossard's 1879 Monograph on the early coppers. Hays collected 1794 cents and marked the edges of each with Maris numbers in white ink.
