Rare EARLY Japanese Navy CUSTOM Mounted Samurai Kyu-gunto Sword w/1600s A.D. Signed Blade. World War 2 bring back Samurai sword. EARLY Japanese Samurai Naval CUSTOM mounts sword with old family blade.

These mounts are among the earliest post-Samurai mounts.

After Japan outlawed the Samurai class, it embraced Western military methods and invited military instructors to advise them on their modernization efforts. This period was documented in the movie "The Last Samurai".

Japanese army and naval sword mounts were fashioned after Western military swords. The Japanese sword during this time became a hybrid blend of Japanese and Western styles. These custom mounts date to the very earliest of these early period mounts--around ~1873 A.D.

The blade nakago is signed "Yamashiro no Daij? Minamoto Kunishige". Kunishige worked from 1624-1661 A.D. Kunishige work is rated jo-saku.

The blade nagasa measures 22 3/4" (57.8 cm) from blade tip to notch in the blade spine.

CONDITION: The blade is in original Japanese polish. The blade has some occasional pitting--but will polish nicely. The hamon and boshi are perfectly healthy and attractive.
