Das vorliegende Dreiviertelporträt präsentiert Karl I. Ludwig von der Pfalz (1617-1680) als jungen, stattlichen Mann. Die Komposition entspricht jener bekannten ganzfigurigen Darstellung des Kurfürsten von Anthonies van Dyck, welche sich in New Yorker Privatbesitz befindet (vgl. Susan J. Barnes u.a., Van Dyck. A complete catalogue of the paintings, New Haven/London 2004, S. 487, Nr. IV.71) und in mehreren Wiederholungen von der Van Dycker Werkstatt verbildlicht wurde (siehe National Gallery, London, Inv.-Nr. NG6364). Sowohl das vorliegende Gemälde als auch das ganzfigurige Original Van Dycks wurden noch im 19. Jahrhundert irrig als Bildnisse seines, knapp zwei Jahre jüngeren Bruders Rupert (1619-1682) identifiziert. Van Dyck hat von diesem ebenfalls ein Standporträt gefertigt (vgl. National Gallery, London, Inv.-Nr. NG6363).
