Colonials
1787 Connecticut Copper, Mailed Bust Right, Muttonhead, M. 1.2-C, W-2720, R.3, XF45 PCGS. The famous Muttonhead variety is one of the most distinctive and hard-to-grade varieties in the Connecticut series. The central design elements are typically sharp, while the peripheral areas are almost always weak. This is a middle die state of the popular Guide Book type. Several letters in the obverse legend are partially or fully absent, the reverse legends are clear. The strike is typical in the centers but the borders are sharp. Golden-brown toning dominates, the reverse highpoints display curious maroon tints. A few degrees off center toward 5 o'clock, but the legends are generally intact. Listed on page 32 of the 2026 Guide Book. PCGS Population: 5 in 45, 6 finer (3/26).
