MASSIVE Japanese Samurai Sword -Antique Satsuma -31 1/4

A Shin-Shinto period daito of exceptional size and length. 31 1/4" nagasa cutting edge (79.4 cm) from blade tip to notch in the blade spine. The overall length of this sword when in its saya is 46" (116.84 cm)--about 8" (20.32 cm) longer than most swords. This sword has a perfect, healthy hamon and boshi. The hamon is sanbonsugi--"three cedars". The blade measures a large 35mm in width--an imposing, massive blade.

The Edo period mounts/koshirae are Satsuma. The menuki are large moons. The tsuba is signed "Norisuke". Norisuke worked from 1833-1848 A.D. The seppa are covered in gold foil. The blade is in original Japanese polish. The blade has occasional minor staining. The tsuka/handle was rewrapped--this is exactly what the Japanese do after silk ito has deteriorated after a couple of centuries--perfectly acceptable. There are no nicks in the cutting edge. This sword would be an easy polish, and would come out a stunner after polish. There is not a single ware (weld opening) in the blade.
