The book claims to be translated from the papers of an English nobleman, but according to Tiele it was composed by G. van Broekhuizen, a professional translator. Muller, on the other hand, was convinced that "Melton was at New-York in 1668, in the height of the quarrel between England and Holland on the possession of the country, so that he uses the names New York and New Amsterdam indiscriminately".
