allegorical of the month of May, painted en grisaille and heightened with flesh tones and gilding with a loving couple and a fool, the rim with dragons interspersed with four cartouches alternating with the initials P. R, the date 1561 and May ; the reverse centred by an Oriental head within a scrollwork , also dated 1561

NOTE
The present plate would have been one of a set of twelve allegorical of the months, of which one probably from the same set, January, was sold in Sotheby's London 2 July 1997, lot 231. Verdier illustrates two similar size plates dated 1566 representing May and September in the Walters Art Gallery Baltimore, the composition of which is loosely based on the Labours of the Months by Etienne Delaune.
