Fatimids
al-Hâkim bi-'amrillâh, 386-411 H./996-1021 AD.
Gold Dinar 406 H., 'Adan (?). Obv. lâ ilaha illâ llâh / Muhammad / rasûlu llâh / 'Alî walîyu llâh, single marginal legend Qur. IX 33, rev. 'abd-allâh al-imâm / al-hâkim bi'amri llâh / amîr al-mu'minîn, marginal legend with mint and date. 3,91 g. Nicol -; Album –.

Unknown and probably unique. Very fine.

The type corresponds to Nicol type N13, which he only knew to have been used for North African silver. The reading of the mint is probable, not certain, as the last letter nûn is ambiguous. 'Adan was certainly a Sunni city, not ready to accept Fatimid domination. The crucial geographic position, controlling the trade between Egypt and India, must have made it a strategic point for Fatimid policies and da'wa.
