CANADA. Dominion of Canada. 500 Dollars, 1911. DC-19. PMG Choice Fine 15.
Imprint of ABNC, Ottawa. Here is the Holy Grail of Canadian currency. The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money reports that just three examples of this type are available to collectors. However, a quick glance at PMG's population report shows that four examples have been encapsulated by their service, with none having been graded finer than VF20. This type is even missing from the holdings of the Bank of Canada collection. The portrait at center is of Queen Mary, which was engraved by R. Savage. Mary of Teck was the Queen of the United Kingdom and British Dominions, as well as Empress of India from May 6th, 1910 until January 29th, 1936. To the left and right of her portrait are large die counters, with "500" found in each corner. The signature panel is comprised of yellow-brown tint, and the countersigner's signature is still legible. Flipping over to the back of the note, geometric patterns have masterfully been engraved by ABNC in brown ink. Ten "500" counters are found throughout the design, with "DOMINION OF CANADA" at bottom. This will be the first time we have handled this important piece publicly, and Track & Price reports it has been 14 long years since a major US company has offered this type at public auction. All of the prestigious Canadian paper collectors will surely jump at the chance to take this grail home, so expect a hard fought battle to win this treasure. PMG comments "Restoration", which appears to be well executed and mainly in the margins.

From the Paradise Collection.
