Miscellaneous Preliminary Reverse Sketch for the Standing Liberty

Miscellaneous
Preliminary Reverse Sketch for the Standing Liberty Quarter. Paper: 6 x 8.5 in. Sketch: 3.3 in. diameter. A preliminary rough sketch by Hermon MacNeil for the reverse of the Standing Liberty quarter. The eagle flies to the left with large wings in side view, UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN and QUARTER DOLLAR written in the margins surrounding. The concept is similar to that ultimately adopted for coinage, although this particular drawing was never advanced to a more finished version. It is similar in composition to a reference image of an eagle in MacNeil's archives that were salvaged by John A. Coughlin in 1947 and sold to Eric P. Newman circa 1960.
