Liberty Double Eagles 1868 $20 MS62 PCGS. Ex: H. Jeff

Liberty Double Eagles
1868 $20 MS62 PCGS. Ex: H. Jeff Browning; The Gilded Age Collection. Mint State double eagles from the late 1860s are all scarce, although the 1868 Philadelphia issue is notably scarcer than any other Motto date in the 1866 to 1869 period. This example is tied for the second-finest certified example at PCGS and displays bold repunching on the date -- an unlisted variety. Oblique repunching is most apparent on the flag and base of the 1, which is at least triple-punched. The base and upper-left outside loop of the first 8 show bold repunching, doubling exists above the 6 and second 8. This repunched date variety certainly seems strong enough to merit mention in the Cherrypickers' Guide, yet no mention is seen any double eagle reference we we have viewed. Even more impressive is this coin's preservation. It is tied within the Condition Census for the date. A solitary mark at the upper obverse and a few minor abrasions are recognized by the assigned grade. This smooth and frosty example displays luminous orange-gold color and offers outstanding eye appeal. The strike is uniformly sharp. PCGS Population for the date: 5 in 62, 1 finer (1/25).
