Field Marshal Lord Methuen’s Victorian Scots Guards Officer’s Bearskin This example was worn by by Field Marshal Lord Paul Stanford Methuen GCB., GCMG, when Colonel of the Regiment. The bearskin of black fur, the interior with a full soft leather lining bearing a Cater trade label. Complete with brass graduated chin chain. The bearskin remains in good condition with some age wear, the stiff leather lining to the interior has softened. GC Provenance: the Methuen Estate & Bosleys Sale 9th March 2005 Lot 917. Field Marshal Methuen was appointed Colonel of the Scots Guards in 1904. His career began when he was commissioned into the Scots Guards in 1864. He saw service on the Gold Coast and the Afghan War. He was with the Regiment in Egypt 1882 and by the Boer War he was commanding the 1st Division on the advance to Kimberley. He was present at the Battles Belmont, Enslin, Modder River and Magersfontein. At the latter two actions he was wounded. He was finally appointed Commander in Chief South Africa 1907 to 1909 and during the Great War he was appointed Governor and Commander in Chief Malta. In 1920 he was appointed Governor and Constable of The Tower.
