F.BONNEVILLE (*1755), Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Louvet, around 1830, Etching
François Bonneville (1755 Bacqueville-en-Caux - 1844 Paris): Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Louvet, c. 1830, Etching
Technique: Etching on Laid paper
Date: c. 1830
Description: Etching by F. Bonneville, with text from Bonneville's "Portr. des personnages célèbres de la Révolution", signed below the image: "F. Bonneville del. et sculp.", inscribed below "J. B. Louvet. Député au Conseil des Cinq Cents parle dep. de la haute Vienne". Bonneville portrayed Louvet in half profile. Only a few long hairs crown Louvet's bald skull. With his very large eyes and small mouth, he appears reserved, looking earnestly at the viewer. Jean-Baptiste Louvet, called Louvet de Couvray (1760 - 1797), was a politician during the French Revolution. As a writer he had become famous in France with the novels "The Adventures of Chevalier Faublas" (1787/1789) and "Emilie de Varmont" (1791). François Bonneville (first mention 1796, last mention 1802) was a portrait painter, engraver, etcher and publisher. Bonneville became known for his four-volume work "Portr. des personnages célèbres de la Révolution" with annotations by P. Quenard. The work contains 200 portraits (copper engravings and etchings) after his own drawings, some of which he engraved himself. "Portr. des personnages célèbres de la Révolution" is of great contemporary historical importance, as it contains the only authentic portraits of many personalities of the revolutionary period.
