Japanese Miyao Sei Meiji Period Bronze Censer

Miyao Sei Japanese Meiji period bronze, a figural censer holder depicting an armored samurai warrior supporting a large lidded lobed caldron above his head, the vessel richly adorned with applied gilt foliate ornamentation and surmounted by a removable lid topped with a kirin finial. The warrior shown in full armor with finely incised and applied gilt decoration including dragons and geometric motifs, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship associated with Miyao workshop bronzes. A raised gilt name cartouche appears on the back of one leg Miyao Sei. The figure stands on a carved wooden base accented with matching gilt ornamentation. Provenance Flying Cranes New York.
