Territorial Gold
(1842-52) $5 A. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G. 21C, AU55 NGC. CAC. K-27, Low R.5. Geographically, the Piedmont Region of the United States is situated along the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Mountains and extends from New York to Alabama, although the region is mostly concentrated in Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia. Substantial gold deposits were discovered in the region. The Bechtler family took advantage of the opportunity to establish an active private minting facility with their coinage well received in the local economy. This Choice AU example survives from that coinage and exhibits splendid honey-gold surfaces with nearly full luster. Listed on page 409 of the 2025 Guide Book. Census: 8 in 55, 16 finer. CAC: 1 in 55, 4 finer (5/24). From The James E. Blake Collection.
