Boston Festival Orchestra. 1895.

ARTIST: JULIUS A. SCHWEINFURTH (1858-1931) SIZE: 14 x 28 1/8 in./35.4 x 71.3 cm PRINTER: Winthrop B. Jones, Boston DESCRIPTION: In sublime sunset-hued reds and oranges, Schweinfurth presents four charming medieval musicians to promote the 1895 Boston Festival Orchestra. Clearly inspired by Beardsley, he's created a fully ornate border to frame the foursomeĀ—and these figures were based on an outline drawing by French painter Olivier Merson in the Luxembourg Museum. Schweinfurth was born in Auburn, NY and had a successful career as an architect in Boston; he also dabbled in creative projects including drawings and watercolor studies. Unfortunately, his poster production was not as abundant, and this is one of only two posters he ever designed. Rare! (Art Nouveau; Music; American)
