AN EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE SACRED COBRA IN HIGH RELIEF ROMAN, CIRCA 1ST-3RD CENTURY A.D. Carved with details of scales on the body and hood, with an oval object, possibly a basket with trailing streamers, surmounting the head, modern mount 29cm high, 21.5cm wide Provenance: Collected by Gustave Jequier (1868-1946) Christie's New York, Antiquities, 4 June 2008, lot 27, where purchased by Robert Kime Condition Report: Overall, in good condition with much of the incised decoration on the body of the snake clearly visible. The surface has a patchy darker patination and shows some wear in places. There are some chips and losses to the edges of the background and some minor surface abrasion to the mouth, some chips and abrasion to the basket and tip of the tail, with some surface wear throughout. With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning.
