On the occasion of his marriage to Princess Stephanie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1837-1859) in 1858, King Pedro V of Portugal (1837-1861) acquired in France, to the Porcelain and Crystal Rihouet LeRosey Factory, through Councellor Marçal José Ribeiro, a full table set that included silverware, porcelain and crystal (National Archives, A.H.M.F. Royal House, Box 4540, doc.73, May 20th, 1858). A few years later his brother, King Luís I (1838-1889), ascended to the throne.
Following from his marriage to Princess Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911) the king will enlarge the crystal set with an additional order, which included a selection of pieces of the same model and decoration but of new tipologies, the only alteration being the new king’s cypher (National Archives A.H.M.F. Royal House, Box 4703, doc.110, December 22nd, 1863).
The Porcelain and Crystal Rihouet LeRosey Factory was founded in 1818 by Louis Marie François Rihouet and, as soon as 1824 was awarded the warrant of Porcelain Suppliers to the French Royal House. Througout the 19th century it supplied various other European courts, namely the Portuguese.
The National Palace of Ajuda, in Lisbon, keeps in its collections pieces of this set that have been acquired at auction. The service was originally stored at the Royal Palace of Necessidades, also in Lisbon, having been shiped to the deposed King Manuel II (1889-1932), exiled in England following the fall of the monarchy in 1910.
