CASED WHITWORTH PERCUSSION "SHARPSHOOTER" RIFLE
SERIAL NUMBER: B353. BARREL: 33". CALIBER: .451. MANUFACTURED: 1857-1865, This is an example of Whitworth Rifle like those used by Confederate Sharpshooters during the Civil War. The Whitworth was reportedly accurate up to 1800 yards or more. This rifle has an adjustable blade front sight, notch and ladder rear sight. The barrel has Birmingham proofs as well as "52" bore marking and the serial number "B353" on the left at the breech. Marked "Whitworth Patent" on top of barrel and crowned "W" trademark and "Whitworth" markings on the lock. The lock has a half cock safety. The stock is military style and is checkered at the wrist. Includes wood case with contemporary Whitworth Rifle Company label, a leather sling, a bullet mold and other accoutrements. CONDITON: Fine with 70% period refurbished blue finish, smooth gray and brown patina on the lock and furniture with some patches of minor pitting. The legends are crisp. The action works well as does the half cock safety. The refinished stock has crisp checkering, and a small tight hairline crack at the back of the lock. The stock has scattered minor impressions. The case is very good and has light wear. Includes a 1982 Lyle Official Arms & Armor Review book that shows a similar example of this firearm. ANTIQUE.
