Contemporary full calf boards with a later calf spine. * Richard Owen (1808-1892) was one of the leading nineteenth century paleontologists and an outstanding naturalist with a remarkable gift for interpreting fossils. He gave the English language (firstly in the work above) the word Dinosaur formed from two Greek words e???? (deinos) "terrible, powerful, wondrous" and sa???? (sauros) "lizard".
