An interesting Grenadier Guards officer’s sword associated with F. Marshal


An interesting Grenadier Guards officer’s sword associated with F. Marshal Earl Roberts, straight blade 32”, with narrow fullers at the outer edges, and marked “Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London” on one edge at forte, and “May 1856” on the other with no. 6767, etched with crowned VR cypher and “Sevastopol” scroll, in elaborate scrolled panel on one side, and crowned grenade with owner’s crest and initials “JCS” in panel on the other side, the lower 15” of the blade refinished at a later date with a panel on one side etched “This sword belonged to the Hon John Constantine Stanley, Grenadier Guards, whilst serving from 1857 to 1862 as ADC to Earl Canning, Viceroy of India. It was given by Colonel Stanley, on leaving the Viceroy’s Staff, to Major Roberts VC (afterwards F.M. Earl Roberts) who returned it to Mrs Stanley on her husband’s death”, pierced steel guard of plain “honeysuckle” pattern, forward sloping pommel and backstrap with chequered panels, wirebound fishskin grip, in a non matching brass scabbard (dented overall).
