A SANDSTONE TORSO OF A FEMALE DEITY, ANGKOR PERIOD, BAPHUON STYLE
Khmer Empire, 11th century. Naturalistically carved with prominent breasts and her belly beautifully rounded. Wearing a long, pleated sampot tied at the front, the long central fold draping down the front, held together at the hips with a patterned belt suspending ornate tassels fastened at the front with a knot, her body richly adorned with floral jewelry.
Provenance:
From an old Belgian private collection, acquired before 1970 and thence by descent in the family. A certificate of authenticity from Asian Antiques Association of Thailand, Bangkok, signed and dated 21 October 1999, confirming the dating above, accompanies this lot.
Condition:
Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, losses, chips, nicks, and scratches. Fine, naturally grown patina with beautiful rust-colored patches.
