FIZEAU Hippolyte (Paris 1819 1896 Venteuil).... Lot 42

FIZEAU Hippolyte (Paris 1819 1896 Venteuil). House built on rue St Georges by Mr Renaud. Around 1841. Fizeau process, after a daguerreotype by Noel-Marie Paymal LEREBOURS (1807 1873). One of the only three plates engraved "without retouching" using the Fizeau process, published in the album of the Excursions daguerriennes: vues et monuments les plus remarquables du globe (Tome 2, Paris, Rittner et Goupil, Lerebours, Bossange, 1840-1843). Proof print on china applied on vellum. All margins. 37 x 26.8 cm (sheet). Condition A (a few marginal pale pits).
This publication closely followed the presentation of the Fizeau process to the Academie des Sciences, as Lerebours reminds us in the foreword of his work: "For a long time, those who are concerned with art, those who keep up to date with scientific news, knew that they were busy transforming daguerreotype proofs into engraved plates; but although they knew all the wisdom of the skilful chemist to whom we already owe the gold chloride and brominated water, so many difficulties seemed insurmountable in this undertaking that no one believed it would succeed: in the last eight days, this success has become certain, and the results have been presented to the Academy of Sciences.
