




A RUSSIAN GARDNER PORCELAIN FIGURINE, LATE 19TH C
A fine Russian porcelain figurine depicting a peasant making traditional Russian shoes from a bark called bast shoes. The figurine is skillfully executed and neatly hand-painted. On the verso there is a red ink Gardner factory mark overglaze, and an incised Gardner mark, "H5." The famous Gardner factory was considered the best porcelain enterprise of the Russian Empire. Similar figurines depicting peasant life were very popular in the 19th century.
