EUROPEAN ART DECO HAND-KNOTTED CARPET SIGNED GINZKEY 1920
A European Art Deco hand-knotted carpet signed Ginzkey circa 1920. The field composed of two shades of blue forming small flower and leaf design with waves and spirals all highly sculptured, within a simple border of water wave design in shades of light rose and beige. Founded by Ignaz Ginzkey in the second half of the 19th Century, the Ginzkey company equipped the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City with the world's largest carpet. Provenance: From the original collection of the Maybrook mansion in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. The 20,000 square foot Gothic mansion was originally built on its 67 acre property by liquor baron, real estate developer, and art collector Henry Clay Gibson in 1881. The mansion along with its art and antiques collection was passed on from the Gibson family to John W. Merriam, and then finally to his stepson Robert Lockyer, the current owner.
