1793 S-10 R4 Wreath Cent AU55 PCGS, CAC Approved. Glossy medium reddish chocolate brown with traces of lighter brown toning in protected areas. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal and just a light touch of friction on the highest points of the devices. The surfaces are smooth except for a microscopic trace of reddish verdigris under the second A in AMERICA. The only notable marks are a small planchet flake at the end of a hair strand behind the head (as struck) and a tiny rim nick over the E in LIBERTY. E-MDS, Breen state I late. The border beads before the mouth are starting to weaken but are still clearly visible. Graded EF45 by Del Bland and listed as tied for CC#6 in the Bland/Breen condition census. Noyes says EF40 and CC#8, his photo #85121. This cataloger's EAC grade is EF40+. A sharp, attractive cent that comes with a provenance that includes some of the brightest luminaries in large cent collecting. The attribution and Downing-Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 58, 2 in 64. 35462.55/37368573.

A former employer of the cataloger (MRB), George Richard "Rick" Howard was the proprietor of Howard's Coin Shop in Findlay, Ohio and in Leipsic, Ohio. Howard was born in Leipsic on July 29, 1948 and died there on March 30, 2023. In addition to his coin business, he operated other successful businesses including sports collectibles and coin-operated amusement arcades. He served more than 30 years as the treasurer of the First Lutheran Church in Leipsic. He was also a passionate student of Civil War history.
