The fine Second World War 30 Corps Advance to Arnhem, Palestine Jewish Revolt, Jubilee 1977, and Police long service group awarded to Constable S.B. Murrant, London Metropolitan Police, who having served as a Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, went on to serve for almost 30 years with the Metropolitan Police, nearly all of it with E Division at Holborn, and is confirmed as entitled to the 1977 Jubilee Medal. 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal; War Medal; General Service Medal 1918-62, clasp Palestine 1945-48; (14672853 L/SJT. MURRANT), Sydney Bernard Murrant was born on 25th June 1925 in Midhurst, Sussex, and having worked as an outfitters assistant, with the ongoing Second World War, then enlisted into the British Army on 18th November 1943, joining as a Guardsman (No.14672853) the Irish Guards. Serving with the 1st Battalion, Murrant took part in 30 Corps famous attempt to relieve the airborne troops at Arnhem in September 1944, when the Irish Guards Group under their celebrated commander, Lieutenant Colonel J.O.E. Vandeleur, led an attack on the bridge over the Meuse-Escaut Canal at De Groote Barrier, forever immortalised by the film “A Bridge Too Far”. Murrant later became a Sergeant, and saw service with the 1st Battalion in Palestine post-war during the Jewish Revolt. Discharged from the army on 21st July 1949, Murrant then joined the London Metropolitan Police on 5th December 1949 as a Constable (Warrant No.135179) with the Training School, and then joined E Division at Holborn on 27th March 1950. Transferring to C Division at St James on 2nd July 1956, he then rejoined E Division on 1st April 1965, and remained there for the remainder of his career. Awarded the Police Long Service Medal on 12th May 1972, and confirmed as having been awarded the Jubilee Medal 1977, he was pensioned on 12th February 1978, and died shortly afterwards on 6th November 1979.
