Austrian artist of the 20th century. Important representative of the Austrian avant-garde. 1900 to 1903 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, 1903 to 1906 at the Prague Academy of Arts. 1906 Member of the Prague group OSMA (The Eight), including representatives of the Czech avant-garde such as Otakar Kubín, Emil Filla, Bohumil Kubišta and Emil Artur Longen, among others. In 1908 and 1909 participated in the Vienna Art Show. Early influences of Vincent van Gogh, counted among the Viennese Expressionists around Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka and Albert Paris Gütersloh. 1911 to 1915 in Berlin, involvement with Cubism and collaboration on the journal Die Aktion. 1915 to 1925 in Switzerland, beginning his exploration of music. End of the 1920s in Berlin and from 1931 again in Vienna. 1932 emigration via Switzerland to the USA. In 1937 his works were classified by the Nazis as degenerate art. Created mainly portraits, religious depictions and scenes from everyday life. Numerous expressionist works with influences from Cubism and Futurism on the theme of music, impressive depictions of composers, conductors, musicians and famous orchestras such as the string quartet founded by the brothers Arnold Rosé and Eduard Rosé in 1882. Only the hands of the musicians Paul Fischer, Arnold Rosé, Anton Ruzitska and Anton Walter are visible, the tense fingers, the bows and instruments condense into intense playing.

Österreichischer Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bedeutender Vertreter der österreichischen Avantgarde. 1900 bis 1903 Studium an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien, 1903 bis 1906 an der Prager Kunstakademie. 1906 Mitglied der Prager Gruppe OSMA (Die Acht), darunter Vertreter der tschechischen Avantgarde wie u.a. Frühe Einflüsse von Vincent van Gogh, zählte zum Wiener Expressionismus um Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka und Albert Paris Gütersloh. 1911 bis 1915 in Berlin, Auseinandersetzung mit dem Kubismus und Mitarbeit an der Zeitschrift Die Aktion. 1915 bis 1925 in der Schweiz Beginn seiner Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema Musik. Ende der 1920er Jahre in Berlin und ab 1931 wieder in Wien. 1932 Emigration über die Schweiz in die USA. 1937 wurden seine Werke von den Nazis als entartete Kunst eingestuft. Schuf v.a. Porträts, religiöse Darstellungen und Szenen aus dem Alltagsleben. Zahlreiche expressionistische Werke mit Einflüssen aus Kubismus und Futurismus zum Thema Musik, eindrucksvolle Darstellungen von Komponisten, Dirigenten, Musikern und berühmten Orchestern wie dem, von den Brüdern Arnold Rosé und Eduard Rosé 1882 gegründeten, Streichquartett. Von den Musikern Paul Fischer, Arnold Rosé, Anton Ruzitska und Anton Walter sind nur die Hände zu sehen, die angespannten Finger, die Bögen und Instrumente verdichten sich zu einem intensiven Spiel.
