A GEORGE III GILTWOOD MIRROR POSSIBLY IRISH, CIRCA 1780 With squirrel surmount and swan terminal 120cm high, 60cm wide Provenance: Property of Harry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) Skyring House, Worthing, and thence by descent Photographs of the interior of the house show this mirror in situ in the Drawing Room Harry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) - cousin to William Howard Taft, 27th president of the United States - and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) were members of the Boston elite. Their two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hayward (1906-1976) and Harriet Taft Hayward (1907-1968), lived at Oakwald, Franklin, Massachusetts and were both painted by the artist Sir John Lavery (1856 - 1941); see Christie's, The Scottish Sale at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, 6975, 28th October 2004, Lot 152. Condition Report: There are scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are losses, observations and restorations including: the backboards have not been removed for inspection; the mirrors to the crest are later replacements; some cracks, later wood carved repairs, composition repairs and later gilding covering some of these areas; the gilding has some craquelure and flaking, in places revealing the gesso or underlying wood; there is some evidence of worm; some losses; some loose pieces; other cracks and repairs for example to the swan's neck and some tips of leaves; some holes to the back from previous fixings and some metal fixings and fragments of old fixings; the back with an ochre coloured wash, with some flaking; Please see the additional photographs as a visual reference of condition.
