Liberty Half Eagles
1866 $5 XF45 PCGS. CAC. The design of the half eagle was modified in 1866 to include IN GOD WE TRUST as a "motto expressing National reliance upon divine support" as suggested by Mint Director James Pollock. From a light mintage of only 6,700 pieces, likely fewer than 100 examples survive and PCGS reports only five examples in Mint State (3/26). This lightly circulated XF45 displays original green-gold patina with healthy remnants of luster in the protected areas.
