Australia.- [ Robinson (Francis Whitfield)] A 360-degree photograph panorama of Sydney (November 1885) , 12 mammoth albumen prints, the sheets joined to form a panorama, titled and dated in the negative "SYDNEY, Nov 12th 1885", total sheet size approx. 410 x 5600 mm (16 1/8 x 220 in), mounted on linen as a scroll, some fading, occasional surface wear, some repaired tears, small loss and fraying at edges, unframed, rolled in tube, 1885 Provenance: Sale. Sotheby's, London, Travel, Atlases, Maps and Natural History, 12th November 2019, lot 156 *** A rare large 360-degree photograph panorama of Sydney, taken from the roof of the Government Printing Office, showing Circular Quay, the city centre, the inner western and eastern suburbs, the Botanical Gardens and harbour. Robinson, a printmaker and photographer, began his career in Melbourne and in 1866 exhibited eight views of Melbourne taken from the Post Office tower. He moved to Sydney in 1867 and received a royal warrant from the Duke of Edinburgh in 1868 having taken photographs for the duke on his 1867-68 visit to Australia. An example of this panorama (in two 6-plate parts) is held in the National Library of Australia (PIC/8178/A[-B]) and was shown in their exhibition "In a New Light: Australian Photography 1850s-1930s" (2003-04).
