Index. 16mo. First edition. Full polished calf binding, front and back boards double ruled in gilt, the spine divided into six compartments by five raised bands, the title gilt in a black morocco panel, the remaining compartments tooled with ornaments and gilt, faded. Re-backed, with original spine laid down. Corners slightly bumped. Marbled end papers, slightly defaced, and marbled edges, the rear free end paper replaced with a closely matching one. Inscription in ink dated 1846 on second front free end paper (”William Cornwallis West from his affectionate friend C. H. Russell. January 1846”). Inside tight and very clean.
Nicol, James. Professor of Natural History in Marischal College and University of Aberdeen. Nicol began lecturing at Marischal College in 1853. When, in 1860, the University of Aberdeen was formed by the fusion of King’s College and Marischal College, Nicol became its first Professor of Natural History, a post he held until his death. At that time, geology was taught by the Professor of Natural History. Nicol’s passion was geology and for him the most exciting animals were those that had had the good fortune to become fossils.
