ACHAEMENID PERSIA. Xerxes II-Artaxerxes II (5th-4th centuries BC). AV daric (17mm, 8.35 gm). NGC Choice MS★ 5/5 - 5/5, Fine Style. Lydo-Milesian standard, Sardes, ca. 420-375 BC. Persian king or hero, wearing cidaris and candys, quiver over shoulder, in kneeling-running stance right, drapery in long curve from left knee to right ankle, right knee obscured by drapery, transverse spear in right hand, bow forward in left / Irregular rectangular incuse punch. Carradice Type IIIb, Group C. Sunrise 28. A masterful example - perfectly centered on lustrous flan and struck from dies of finer style than typically encountered in the series. Easily deserving of the star designation for superior eye appeal and tied for the finest certified with only five examples in the current census at Choice Mint State with a star.
