An embroidered lawn robe à l'Anglaise, circa 1770-80, delicately embroidered in chain stitch with stripes and sprigs of pinks, convolvulus, dog roses, honeysuckle, tied with pink bows, closed-front bodice panels with drawstring to neck, the sleeves with shaped elbows adorned with ruffles; together with a pink taffeta petticoat, 18th century (2) Provenance: Originally part of the Doris Langley Moore collection. CONDITION REPORT: Most 18th century dresses have been altered to some degree. Embroidery - colours are good and quality is fine. Small brown stain to front closure. The bodice: side seams have been taken in and sleeves have been re-set. The lining shows no alterations to back seam of front bodice panels. The skirt has cotton cord loops at the waist sides which may have been used to polonaise the skirt but there are no corresponding buttons. The skirt is generally good. The hem has a patched repair to the plain lawn edge 3x14cm. Left pocket slit has been partly sewn up. Some of the long tacking stitches holding the pleats in place below the back waistline are loose or defective. Small darned repair to right of left pocket slit. Scattering of small darned repairs to pleated area to the left of the back waist point. The skirt is generally good with the occasional rust spot. The petticoat is 18th century but heavily altered, with splits in several places.
