Head of Athena right, wearing earring, necklace, and crested Attic helmet ornamented with three laurel leaves and vine scroll / AΘE, owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig with two leaves and one berry, and crescent moon behind, all within incuse square. Kroll 8. SNG Copenhagen 31-40. HGC 4, 1597. Bright, flashy, and prooflike, this specimen boasts an impressive 28mm flan and the highest grade awarded for the type at Choice Mint State. It is also tied with one other example at this grade level with a star for superior eye appeal (Heritage Auctions, Auction 3066, 17 August 2018, lot 30035, realized $36,000; resold in Auction 3075, 15 August 2019, lot 32019, realized $19,200; then offered through our Make Offer to Owner program and resold for $43,500 on 5 July 2022).
