* King Edward VIII, Signed Document, with Grenadier Guards related items. An interesting group of memorabilia relating to the Herbert family [Lord Treowen] of Llanarth Court, Raglan comprising: type face record of gratitude for taking part in the vigil over the body of King George V in Westminster Hall (23-28 January 1936) addressed to Lieutenant R. C. C. Herbert, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards on black edged engraved Buckingham Palace writing paper and signed Edward R I, in gilt easel frame; three quarter length photograph of Herbert (as a Captain) in full dress uniform holding bearskin, in a silver frame (16cm x 21cm, hallmarked Birmingham 1938); a framed photograph of King George V lying in state, 22cm x 17cm; a printed letter dated July 16th 1936 announcing new colours for the Grenadier, Coldstream, and Scots Guards, signed in facsimile and in a folding gilt frame; a framed printed address and picture regarding the death in action of Capt The Hon Elydor Herbert, only son of the 1st Baron Treowen; a framed photograph of a Grenadier Guards presentation ceremony, a silver vesta box (London 1880) engraved E.B.H. 17th Lancers, and a silver cigarette case (Birmingham 1885) engraved E.B.H. from M.C.D. 1886 and later inscriptions; and a pair of brass spurs. The very short period of Edward VIII's reign before his abdication makes documents signed by him as King much scarcer than those signed as Prince. Edward Bleiddian Herbert was commissioned into the 17th Lancers in 1876. (10)
