Miniature copies of the New Testament and Psalter were often bound together dos-à-dos ("back to back") in this way in the 17th century, frequently for female owners. "Intimate objects, they invite attention to every detail, attracting ornamentation, sumptuous leathers, sequins and embroidery on elegant silks" (Edison).
