*Sword. A Victorian 1854 Pattern Officer's sword of the Scots Guards, the 84cm straight steel blade by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, serial no. 29138, etched with regimental crest of the Scots Guards with battle honours and initials for James William Smith-Neill, the steel guard with regimental crest, wire bound fish-skin grip, diced back and domed pommel, 100cm overall, in its brown leather scabbard with additional metal scabbard James William Smith-Neill (1865-1935), served with the regiment from 1888, he was promoted to Captain in 1899 also in that year he became Acting Deputy Assistant Adjutant and equerry to Princess Louis (Queen Victoria's daughter), he reengaged for service during the Great War and was made a Colonel of the Scots Guards, he retired from service in 1919.
